Is a Heater Tune-Up Necessary?

Many homeowners ignore the annual heater tune-up, but there are several reasons you should do it. Here are some of the reasons why a tune-up is crucial:

  • Safety: Having a trained expert inspect your heating system ensures it’s safe to operate.
  • Preventive maintenance: Tune-ups allow an expert to examine your heating system’s inner workings to ensure all components work properly.
  • Proper airflow: Limited or restricted airflow can put a strain on your heating system, leading to increased repairs or a shortened lifespan. Tune-ups include airflow tests to measure how the fan is working to move air throughout your property.
  • Improve energy efficiency: A furnace tune-up includes cleaning and calibration to keep your heating system running as efficiently as possible.

FAQ

  • Should a thermostat be set to auto or on?
Preferably auto. That way, the fan operates only when the temperature requires it. This is the most used and the most efficient setting. However, there are advantages to using the on setting. Air is constantly filtered through the unit's air filter, and the constantly circulating air results in an even temperature throughout the house.
  • Should outdoor units be covered in winter?
No. Ruud heat pumps operate year-round and should never be covered. Similarly, air conditioners that operate seasonally are built to withstand an outdoor environment and should not be covered.
  • What does HSPF stand for?
There are special names for the efficiency ratings of varying types of equipment. Heat pump equipment in the heating mode is rated by the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, or HSPF. The higher the HSPF rating, the more efficient the unit.
